PROJECT PROFILE

The dual-gauge, double-track Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge over River Jamuna (commonly known as the Jamuna Second Railway Bridge) will span 4.8km, and will be constructed parallel to the existing Jamuna Bridge, at a distance of 300m upstream. Once built, the bridge would be the largest dedicated rail bridge in the country. The objective of the project is to improve rail capacity between the capital and the country’s northwestern regions, which would help reduce train delays, generating more revenue for the country. The project, estimated to cost Tk. 16,780 crores, is slated for completion by 2025. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide around Tk. 12,150 crores in project assistance and the Government of Bangladesh will finance the remainder.
